What is Worship Like At Chapel Hill Christian Church?

At Chapel Hill Christian Church, we believe that “Being a Christian is sometimes hard work, that going to church shouldn't be” Worship is an informal experience with everyone sitting in a circle. Our music is a mixture of traditional hymns, folk songs, kid friendly music and gospel music.

Our members and friends participate in our worship service. A member presides at the communion table and offers a communion meditation. Another person hosts the table and helps distribute communion. We also have a reader each week.

Our communion table is open to everyone! We invite everyone to join us around the table to celebrate the fact that we are the loved children of God.

We are blessed to have two pastors with different preaching styles and different perspectives. Our two pastors alternate preaching. In addition our Minister of Music, Laura Fairfax, is ordained and is an active participant in worship and preaching.

Our children participate in the majority of the worship service. During the message our older children have own activities with one of the pastors,  using "Whole People of God" curriculum.

After worship, folks gather to chat and enjoy food and fellowship. We are a casual gang.

Special Worship Services

At Chapel Hill Christian Church, we have a number of special worship  services throughout the year.

During Advent,  we celebrate with an Instant  Christmas Pageant.  Everyone participates in a fun-filled service that tells the story of the birth of Jesus.  On Christmas Eve we come together in the afternoon for a Moravian Love Feast and communion.  During the Advent Season, members and friends provide daily devotionals.

Ash Wednesday begins our Lenten Season. Last year, we celebrated Ash Wednesday downtown at Peace and Justice Square . Over 30 people received ashes and participated in communion. On the first Sunday of Lent, we retire the Alleluia banner and folks make alms boxes. On Good  Friday,  we worship with the solemn Service of the Nails.  On Easter morning we celebrate new life with the return of the Alleluia banner and many butterflies. We also bring our Alms boxes and pour huge amounts of change upon the altar.

We have a very special service the week after Easter. We celebrate Breakfast With Jesus with outside worship and sometimes a fish fry.

Pentecost is the birthday of the Church, and at Chapel Hill Christian Church it is a real celebration.  Each year it is a different and festive experience.

In late summer, we celebrate the kid-friendly service, The Blessing of the Backpacks. We bless the backpacks of kids returning to school as well as the computers, lunch boxes, PDA's and other tools of our adults. We collect school supplies for children at Project HomeStart. In 2007 we collected $800 of supplies.

In October, we celebrate World Communion Sunday, as we join with our brothers and sisters in Christ and gather round the Table of the Lord.

All Saints Sunday provides an opportunity for all of us to ask the blessings of God on the Saints of our lives.

Several times during the year, we have Sing Your Faith Sunday.  These  joyous services match a song with each part of the service.

Come to worship at Chapel Hill Christian Church -- join us in our adventures in worship.
